Predator Effects on Dense Zooplankton Aggregations in the Coastal Ocean

چکیده

The distribution of organisms in the ocean is highly heterogeneous, influencing both sampling and ecological structure. The complex spatial and temporal structure of predators and prey affect one another. Numerous studies in pelagic systems have investigated the effects of prey distribution on predator behavior and studies in benthic habitats have revealed the significant impacts predators can have on prey distribution. However, primarily because of sampling difficulties, few studies have investigated the effects of predators on prey distribution in pelagic systems. In the last decade, advances in measurement capabilities have led to the discovery of plankton aggregations over continental shelves with vertical dimensions of tens of centimeters. These ‘thin layers’ can have a horizontal extent of several kilometers and may persist for days. Sharply distinct from the surrounding water column, the density of phytoplankton and zooplankton in these layers can be orders of magnitude higher than at surrounding depths. The discovery of these ubiquitous layers of plankton has opened up new possibilities in studying aggregation in the ocean. The long-term goal of this work is to understand the ecological importance of thin layers of plankton

Stable isotopes challenge the perception of ocean sunfish Mola mola as obligate jellyfish predators.

Evidence is provided from stable isotope analysis that aggregations of small ocean sunfish Mola mola (total length <1 m) feed broadly within coastal food webs and their classification as obligate predators of gelatinous zooplankton requires revision.

Jellyfish aggregations and leatherback turtle foraging patterns in a temperate coastal environment.

Leatherback turtles (Dermochelys coriacea) are obligate predators of gelatinous zooplankton. However, the spatial relationship between predator and prey remains poorly understood beyond sporadic and localized reports. To examine how jellyfish (Phylum Cnidaria: Orders Semaeostomeae and Rhizostomeae) might drive the broad-scale distribution of this wide ranging species, we employed aerial surveys...

Spatial distributions of zooplankton during coastal upwelling in western Lake Superior

Zooplankton distributions during coastal upwelling in western Lake Superior were mapped with a high-frequency (192~kHz) sonar system that consists of an echosounder and a navigation receiver connected to a microcomputer. An acoustic transect after a September storm revealed a sloping sound-scattering layer, traceable more than 5 km offshore, in the thermocline between an upwelling water mass an...

Apex predators and trophic cascades in large marine ecosystems: learning from serendipity.

T he global loss of large predators is undeniable. However, the effects of predator depletion on the structure and functioning of ecosystems are far from resolved, especially as they apply to large pelagic marine ecosystems. Much of what we know about how marine predators function in ecosystems comes from small-scale studies on relatively small, slow-moving, seafloorfeeding predators that are e...

A plankton population model with biomechanical descriptions of biological processes in an idealised 2D ocean basin

A five component pelagic ecosystem model is coupled to a two dimensional configuration of the Princeton Ocean Model (POM), representing an idealised ocean basin with upwelling and downwelling regions. The formulation of the biological equations is based on biomechanical descriptions of the processes of nutrient uptake, light capture, sinking and predator–prey encounter rates. The biological equ...
